HP Veer: Our Hands-on and First Impressions

Yes we know our video coverage came out slightly later, but hey webOS users won't be getting their mitts on the HP Veer until Spring, so what's your hurry? Check out our video above. The HP Veer is one of two handsets that were introduced during HP's "Think Beyond" Event. Touted as the smallest smartphone ever made, HP hopes the Veer will help buck the trend of oversized slab devices. For detailed specs, check out our Veer article here. Obvious things first: this thing is friggin tiny. Smaller in length than a credit card, length-wise, this phone looks quite small in the hand. This thing is so small, HP elected NOT to cram a micro-USB port or even a headphone jack... these are both taken care of (rather ingeniously), with a magnetic USB port. At first glance, you'd think the Veer a toy, and perhaps a better fit for tweeners and women who just want a messaging and email phone. But the more we played with it, we realized the Veer could have a much broader appeal. A toy this phone ain't. A Palm Pixi replacement, this phone ain't. It's a bonafide smartphone, with an incredibly small and sexy form factor. It handled everything we could throw at it during our short visit, to include two PDK games (Need For Speed, Angry Birds), email, sms, calendar, WOR To Go (shameless, aren't we?), photos, videos, and QuickOffice... simultaneously... without even blinking.
